MEDICINE HAT , AB — Hatters took the plunge Saturday to raise money for the 2017 Special Olympics that Medicine Hat is hosting this summer.

The polar plunge took place near the Family Leisure Centre where 80 people jumped into ice cold water.

Const. Josh Argue, with the Medicine Hat Police Department, said it took firefighters over an hour an a half to cut a hole the pond. “Which I think is Mother Nature’s way of saying ‘you shouldn’t be in me’,” he said.

Ninety people registered for the plunge, but only 75 to 80 people showed up to take the jump.  Argue said the temperature of the water was around the four degree Celsius mark.

“It is definitely an out of body experience,” he said. “It wasn’t as horrible as I thought, I think just the anticipation of the torturing yourself, but you’re with everybody else so combined misery builds camaraderie.”

Over $14,000 dollars was raised.  All money donated stays in Medicine Hat and goes towards the Olympic games as well as supports the special athletes in the city.

Argue said he appreciates everybody who came out to support the cause. “Thank you for coming down and freezing for a reason.”
