Third period comeback pushes Tigers past WHL leading Pats

REGINA, SK — The comeback kids strike again. This time, against the best team in the WHL.

Steven Owre scored his second straight game winning goal, Michael Bullion secured his 13th win with the black-and-orange, and the Medicine Hat Tigers took a chunk out of the Regina pats 6-4 on Friday night.

The Tigers trailed by as many as three goals in the second period. Jordan Henderson and Mark Rassell each scored in the middle frame to bring the team within one, but WHL leading scorer Sam Steel regained the Pats two-goal lead ahead with a short-handed marker of the third period.

Tigers captain Clayton Kirichenko kick-started a dominating final frame with his 11th goal of the season. Medicine Hat outshot Regina 14-7 in the third period.

Chad Butcher scored his 24th goal of the season moments later to match Regina at 4-4.

Then it was Steven Owre, the overtime hero from a 5-4 win in P.A., finding the twine with less than four minutes to play, giving the visiting Tigers a 5-4 lead.

Regina was given a golden opportunity to tie with a late powerplay opportunity, but Medicine Hat denied the Pats of the equilizer. Zach Fischer tossed home an empty-netter, his 30th of the season, to seal the deal for the Tigers.

Both teams were blanked on the man-advantage; Medicine Hat failed to score on three opportunities, while the Pats went 0/4.

The critical two points awarded to the Tigers brings them three points back of the Pats for first place in the WHL. They remain four points up on Lethbridge after the Hurricanes defeated Prince Albert.

Medicine Hat wraps up its three-game road trip against the Moose Jaw Warriors on Saturday night (6:00 p.m. MST).
