Provincial Crown prosecutors says more lawyers are needed to help ease caseload

EDMONTON — Alberta’s Crown prosecutors want 50 more lawyers hired to ease a major backlog of cases.

They’re calling on the province to lift a hiring freeze, saying they’re working at 2006 staffing levels.

Their association says 200 criminal cases have been stayed over the last two months — all due to a shortage of prosecutors.

Justice Minister Kathleen Ganley says the government is working to recruit 14 more prosecutors and suggests it may hire more after the provincial budget comes down March 16th.
