Rogers Hometown Hockey schedule of events released

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Downtown will be the hottest spot of the city from March 3-5 as Rogers Hometown Hockey prepares to broadcast from Medicine Hat.

The city will celebrate the event starting on March 3 with a variety of events scheduled in Downtown Medicine Hat starting at 5 p.m. Second Street SE will turn into a shinny hockey rink, and there will be food trucks, DJ music, a fire truck display, shooter skills station and other entertainment.

The Beveridge Building will play host to a mini sports memorabilia trade show, and also have food and refreshments available, and the Monarch Theatre will play two movies before 11 p.m. Hay rides will be available from sixth avenue to fourth avenue during the evening, and there will be fireworks at 11 p.m.

Friday night will also see Medicine Hat Tigers alumni take on members of the Medicine Hat Police and Fire Services in a hockey game at 7 p.m. Tigers alumni who will be taking part in the game include all-time leading scorer Kevin Riehl and former Calgary Flames Matt Keetley and Stefan Meyer. The game is free and open to the public.

The official Hometown Hockey Tour Festival kicks off on March 4 at noon, and will feature family-friendly activities all weekend long, including skills testing and the chance to meet NHL alumni.

On Sunday night, the Sportsnet mobile studio will be set up in front of City Hall for a live Hometown Hockey broadcast of the Vancouver Canucks and Anaheim Ducks hockey game. Ron MacLean and Tara Slone will host the broadcast, which starts at 6 p.m.

While the festival is ongoing, road closures will be in effect. Starting March 2 at 7 a.m. , First Street SE will be closed from Fifth Avenue SE to South Railway Street, and Sixth Avenue SE starting at second street SE across Finlay Bridge will be closed. Detours are available.

On Friday, Second Street SE from Sixth Avenue SE to South Railway Street will be closed at noon for setup for the kick-off party on Friday. There will be no parking on Second Street SE from Fourth Avenue to Sixth Avenue starting at approximately 2 p.m. The street will reopen on Friday at midnight.
