Winter returns to Medicine Hat

Feb 23, 2017 | 5:17 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB –  Parts of southeastern Alberta were hit by a mini snow bomb yesterday, with local amounts of between 5 to 10 reported.

Tim Gaines with Environment Canada says a mixing of warm and cold air created an unstable air mass capable of producing localized heavy snowfall.

The foothills of Alberta and some areas around Calgary received similar snowfall amounts, but the snow wasn’t widespread.

It did cause some traffic problems however.

A crash on Highway 3 near Range Road 63 at the western city limits after 4 pm sent one person to hospital with “significant” injuries. RCMP say a man had to be extracted from a car that collided with a truck.

Redcliff RCMP did issue a travel advisory regarding icy conditions just before 8 o’clock last night. Those conditions persist on Highway 1 west from Medicine Hat to Alderson as of 6 am this morning, but Alberta Transportation says it’s bare and dry from Alderson to Calgary.

Highway 1 east to the Saskatchewan border and Highway 3 west from Medicine Hat to the Seven Persons overpass were also listed as partly covered by ice.

Highway 41 north has some icy sections as well. Highway 41 south is covered in ice.

Fog is also reducing visibility in some areas, but it’s expected to lift as the morning wears on.
