MEDICINE HAT, AB — The college food bank is now full thanks to a friendly competition held last week.

The President Student Advisory Council’s 12 members teamed up with different departments in the college to see who could collect the most food.

After five days $3,000 worth of food and $1,000 worth of cash donations and gift cards were donated.

Beth Lewis, president of the student asssocation, said the event was a great way to raise awareness about the food bank.

“I found this was a really great way to educate our staff and students that we have a food bank and it’s getting used a lot more now,” Lewis said. “We’re seeing that increase and it’s really great to raise that awareness within our campus,” she said.

Lewis explained the food bank is free and can be used by anyone no matter their age or program. She said when someone comes in asking for food, there is a process they use to help.

“The student is given a three day supply of food and they can pick out whichever items they want as well as a gift card that can allow them to purchase meat and produce,” Lewis said.

If exta assistance is needed the college has a very close relationship with the Medicine Hat food bank that they can direct people too.

“Any extra food we have that we can’t store we’ll donate to them,” she said.

Lewis said the event was very successful and that she hopes it will continue to run each year.
