FORT MACLEOD, AB – RCMP are asking witnesses to come forward after shots were fired at a TransAlta wind turbine site just south of Fort Macleod.

TransAlta employees found several bullet holes in one of the transformers, and reported it to police on Thursday . It appears the shots were fired from a distance.

Police believe the incident may have happened just after 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the site located along Highway 810 and Township 74, since that’s around the time the company’s main station was tripped.

Financial loss to the company is expected to be significant. The transformer sustained extensive damage, leading to the shutdown of several turbines.

Fort Macleod RCMP are currently investigating the situation. They ask that anyone who may have seen a suspicious vehicle in the Highway 810 and Township 74 area around 6:00 p.m. on Feb. 8, contact them at 403-553-7200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
