Plastic bag debate on city agenda

Jan 30, 2017 | 5:46 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB –  A recommendation calling for the city to take action to increase awareness and education about the use of plastic shopping bags will be on the agenda when the public services committee meets this afternoon.

The recommendation comes from the Youth Advisory Board, after it conducted a community survey last September.

The survey found the biggest challenge to using reusable shopping bags is that most people forget to take them into the store.

Among the recommendations from the Youth Advisory Board is one calling for the city to find a “reminder” app that would help residents remember to take their reusable gabs from their vehicles and into the stores when they go shopping.

The committee will also consider a recommendation to contribute 30 thousand dollars towards celebrations marking Canada’s 150th birthday this year.

The city doesn’t qualify for national or provincial funding programs for the Canada 150 celebrations.
