New Brigden School near Oyen at risk of closing

DUNMORE, AB — New Brigden School could end up closed after this school year.

Prairie Rose School Division approved a motion to consider closing the school, located approximately 30 minutes north of Oyen, during a special meeting Tuesday afternoon.

“It had to do with significant changes in enrolment that have occurred in that school,” said board chair Stuart Angle. “We want to have a look at it with parents and up-and-coming students.”

The Grade 1-9 school had only two students enrolled for the school year in September.

Angle says the motion means the board can start the public consultation process before making its final decision.

A meeting is scheduled at the school on March 20 at 6:30 p.m. to talk with the public about the potential closure.

The final decision on the school closure will be made at the April 11 board meeting.

Byelections announced

Prairie Rose also announced byelections to fill three vacant trustee positions.

The board is looking to fill two seats in Ward One, which includes Oyen, New Brigden and Acadia Valley, and one seat in Ward 4, which includes Redcliff, Ralston and Jenner.

Trustees Bob Wickens, from Redcliff, and Christie Dick, from Oyen, resigned earlier this month because they moved away from their respective wards. Patti Machell, who also represented Ward One, resigned from the board in February 2015. A byelection is required through the School Act as a result of the resignations.

Nominations will be accepted February 9 between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Byelections are set for March 9. Nomination packages are available at the division office.
