EDMONTON — After more than six years in the court system, the man convicted in the deaths of an elderly couple from St. Albert learned his fate on Wednesday.

Travis Vader was handed a single life sentence in prison for manslaughter for the deaths of Lyle and Marie McCann in an Edmonton court. The couple disappeared in July 2010 while travelling to British Columbia. The couple’s burned-out motor home and their vehicle were discovered days after the couple vanished, but their bodies have never been found.

The Crown was seeking a life sentence for the second killing and a 15-year sentence for the first killing. The defence was seeking a sentence of between four and six years. Vader is eligible for parole after seven years.

After the sentence was read, Vader told the court they had convicted an innocent man, and said he would fight to clear his name.
