MEDICINE HAT — Mayor Ted Clugston is among a large group of people preparing for a benefit gala this spring.

The city will host the third annual national PTSD benefit gala in April.

Those among Mayor Clugston include The Medicine Hat Police Service, The Medicine Hat Police Association, The Medicine Hat Fire Service, The Medicine Hat Fire Association, the RCMP and the newest national sponsor – The UPS Store.

The gala in Medicine Hat will be one of many across Canada to help bring funding to this cause.

The objective of the gala is to create awareness of PTSD as a work place injury, fund exisiting programs focused on recovery, further education and implementing strategieis into the work place that can minimize PTSD from occouring.

While PTSD is generally believed to be linked to military personnel, Mayor Clugston said it is important to recognize that it is something that affects all first line responders.

“I think there has been a change. If we keep constantly talking about it saying it’s okay, it’s okay to ask for help,” Clugston said. “It’s often associated with military, we always associate military, but we have to recognize our first responders. Our paramedics, our police, our fire, anybody in the front line.”

Singer Jessie Tylre Williams is leading the galas across the country by spreading her message of healing the world – one song at a time.

She founded and started these galas by wanting to make a change with her music and hasn’t stopped since.

“This is important because of the great heros of our nation that serve and protect us every single day,” Williams said.

For the last three years she has been spreading the message about PTSD awareness and letting people know it’s okay to ask for help.

“We’re really encouraging people to come out and particpiate and to become a part of the solution with PTSD instead of hiding behind it,” she said.

The gala will be held on April 8 at the Medicine Hat Lodge.
