Tigers trounce Pats 8-5

Jan 20, 2017 | 8:13 PM

The CHL’s best team was no match for a tenacious Medicine Hat Tigers club Friday night, as the black-and-orange burnt the Regina Pats barn with an 8-5 victory.

Four Tigers forwards rounded out the scoring; Mark Rassell, Steven Owre, John Dahlstrom and Zach Fischer each collected two goal performances. Overage assistant captain Owre, who was awarded first star honours, pitched in with a pair of helpers as well. Chad Butcher collected three assists, and captain Clay Kirichenko tossed in two helpers.

Medicine Hat broke out to a quick 3-0 lead crossing the midway mark of the opening frame, Owre opening the scoring and Rassell tacking on a pair, but Dawson Leedahl and Adam Brooks cut the Tabbies lead to one through 20 minutes of play.

Dahlstrom’s 20th goal of the season came 1:21 into the second period, but Sam Steel answered back less than a minute later to slash the Tigers lead back to one.

Nick Schneider was pulled after allowing three goals on 13 shots. Michael Bullion came in and stopped 26 of 28 fired his way.

Following the Pats third goal, Dahlstrom collected his second of the night to give the Tigers a 5-3 advantage heading into the final period.

The Pats scored a pair of goals early in the third, including Leedahl’s second of the night, but Owre regained the Tabbies lead with just over 11 minutes to play. His second marker eventually served as the game-winner. Owre’s four point performance is part of 14 in his last seven games.

This is just the third regulation loss at home for Regina. The other two came earlier this month. They’ve now lost three of their last five, while the Tigers have won two of their last three.

Medicine Hat is six points clear of the Lethbridge Hurricanes for top spot in the Central Division with one game in hand. They return to action Saturday night, taking on the Brandon Wheat Kings at 6:30pm MST.
