Medicine Hat — The old Wal-Mart location that has been sitting vacant for the last eight years will soon be getting an upgrade.

Calgary-based company Brentwood Constructions closed the deal on the location in spring of 2015.

There are five stores that have been confirmed for the shopping centre so far. Save on Foods, Liquor Depot, Tim Hortons, 7-11 and Browns Social House are the first stores to sign leases.

The company is still looking for more stores to sign leases for the other locations within the development.

Jay McMartin, president of the company, has many hopes for the shopping centre.

“It will be a destination centre with a number of new tenants to Medicine Hat, so it should draw people from the entire city,” he said.

The centre is estimated to cost $30 million dollars in construction alone.

McMartin says it’s a great opportunity to bring a variety of stores to the city.

“It will bring more amenities and options to residents,” he said,

Construction is set to begin next week and by the fall the initial stores will hopefully be open.
