EDMONTON — The Notley government announced changes to its cabinet to help address the province’s child intervention problems.

Three ministers were sworn into new roles at Government House on Thursday. Danielle Larivee, previously the Minister of Municipal Affairs, will now serve as Minister of Children’s Services. The Ministry of Human Services was renamed the Ministry of Community and Social Services, and will continue to be led by Irfan Sabir.

Shaye Anderson will take over Larivee’s former portfolio as Minister of Municipal Affairs.

“Today’s announcement means we will have more resources and more attention dedicated to taking care of our children and our communities,” said Premier Rachel Notley in a statement. “Minister Larivee will provide thoughtful, compassionate leadership as she works to fix our child intervention system. Minister Sabir will continue with the very capable leadership he provides to his ministry, which has been suitably renamed ‘Community and Social Services.’ I welcome Shaye Anderson to the cabinet table, I know his ample community engagement experience and enthusiasm for rural Alberta will ensure his success as he navigates his new role.”

The government also announced a panel tasked to overhaul its child welfare system, which came under fire after the case of Serenity, a four-year-old girl who died in of a traumatic head injury while in government care in 2014.

NDP MLA Debbie Jabbour will chair the 13 member panel, which includes representatives from all parties. The panel will meet for the first time on Feb. 1.
