MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Curling Club is packed this weekend, as the annual Agriculture Bonspiel gets underway Thursday.

The bonspiel has a full draw, with 32 teams from across southern Alberta competing for the prestigious ‘A’ group trophy at the Medicine Hat Curling Club. Trophies are also guaranteed for teams who finish first in the B, C and D brackets.

Mario Biemans, president of the Agriculture Bonspiel, says the tournament attracts a variety of players on each team, and says while there is an element of competition, there is a large emphasis on friendship from the teams.

“It’s not as much about the curling as you think,” he said. “It’s really just about everybody getting together and visiting and camaraderie.”

The first draw gets underway at 5 p.m. Each team is guaranteed at least four games.

The tournament wraps up Sunday, with final games beginning at 2:30 p.m.
