Cubs earn three points on weekend

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Cubs came away with three points out of a possible four over the weekend.

While the Heritage Junior Hockey League team lost 2-1 via shootout to the Strathmore Spartans on the road Saturday, the Cubs came from behind to top the Three Hills Thrashers at the Kinplex Sunday afternoon.

“We seem to be a third period team lately,” said head coach J.D. Gaetan following the game Sunday. “Earlier in the year, it seemed to be when we died in games and deflated. But, down by two goals, we took it to them and came out strong and tied the game up and went from there.”

The Cubs’ third period rally began halfway through the frame following a goal from Ryan Fauth, which opened the floodgates. One minute later, Matt Clement tied the game for the Cubs. With five minutes remaining, Alex Duclos put the Cubs in the lead, and Nolan Acton scored on the power-play to secure the win.

Cubs goaltender Dan Maier stopped 36 of the 39 shots faced for the win, while Clay Munro made 25 saves.

Gaetan says the team’s effort has become a bright spot during the season.

“The last couple weeks, we’ve been really pushing when we’ve gone down in games,” he said.

The Cubs currently sit at a 6-19-6 record following the weekend.

The Cubs return to the ice on Sunday, travelling to Airdrie to take on the Thunder. The puck drops at 2:15 p.m.
