MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is continuing their investigation into the Bovine TB quarantine.

In an update on Thursday, the agency said some ranchers have already received financial assistance.

The province began accepting applications from affected ranchers last month.

Of the 20 applications, 16 have been approved and cheques have been cashed.

More than 50 properties and 26,000 animals remain under quarantine.

The CFIA said their investigation is still expected to take months, but they’re already taking the next steps needed to get producers back up and running.

“For premises that have housed the infected herd, the CFIA Cleaning and Disinfection Unit will be conducting an assessment, developing decontamination plans and issuing owners of the premises an order to clean and disinfect,” said Dr. Harpeet Kochhar, chief veterinary officer with the agency.

The CFIA said there has been no new cases of Bovine TB.

To date, only six animals have been infected.
