One in custody following Lethbridge standoff

LETHBRIDGE, AB — A Lethbridge man is in custody and facing multiple charges after a weapons incident in the city’s south side on Wednesday.

At approximately 8:30 p.m., Lethbridge Police Service were contacted regarding an assault with weapon which occurred inside a residence located in the 100 block of Fairmont Boulevard South.

Police received information the suspect pointed a firearm at one of the callers inside the residence, which resulted with police surrounding and containing the residence, attempting to make contact with the suspect inside. The suspect refused to communicate with police, and the service’s Critical Incident Team was called out to assume command of the situation.

Attempts to communicate with the suspect were not initially successful. The team deployed several less lethal methods, which resulted in the suspect, and another woman in the residence leaving the building and being taken into police custody. The woman was later released without charges.

Police searched the residence and recovered several firearms.

Kyle Lee Toshi Mitten, 20, has been charged with assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, two counts of mischief under $5,000, use of a firearm while committing an offence, pointing a firearm and assault.

Mitten is in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
