MEDICINE HAT, AB — A local organization once again ensured Christmas miracles for every family in need.

The Medicine Hat News Santa Claus Fund wrapped up its giving season earlier this month, assisting more than 450 families, which includes close to 900 children with Christmas presents and vouchers for food for a Christmas dinner.

“We were definitely able to help everyone who came through out doors this year,” said Theresa Hardiker, president of the fund, who said the need was comparable to previous years.

“I believe we probably saw a lot of new families this year. That was probably due to the job losses around the area and we were able to help.”

Hardiker says the fund could not be able to serve the community in any way without the support it receives from volunteers.

“We had well over 3,000 hours that people put in to help out with our program,” she said.

Through the giving season, the fund collects both cash and toy donations for families who are struggling to make ends meet. Major fundraising events for the fund include toy drives from the Suffield Fire Department, the annual Toy Run from Irvine in September and the Corona Auction in December.

Hardiker is also thankful for the donations received from the community, which find their way into the hands of children.

“Every year at the end of our giving season, I’m absolutely blown away by the community’s support,” she said. “We ended up receiving buckets full of toys. We’re always thankful for all of the monetary donations we get.”

Despite its name, the fund operates all year-round. Hardiker says the fund’s next big project is its annual Easter Dinner. The fund also provides toys for children in transition from traumatic events in their lives, such as a house fire.
