MEDICINE HAT, AB — Both the Fire Chief and Deputy Fire Chief of the Cypress County Fire Department have resigned, CHAT News has learned.

Both Fire Chief Dennis Mann and Deputy Chief Ray Gradwell were on stress leave when they resigned from their position. A Cypress County official said both the demands of the job and the emotional toll it had were the deciding factors in their decisions.

Cypress County added it was hoping to have the positions filled by January, along with a secretary position to assist with increased paperwork in the department,

Cypress County council passed a plan to increase efficiency and effectiveness. The plan lists over 40 recommendations from new training methods to record management.

The Fire Service Board will be monitoring the recommendations and making amendments as they roll them out over the next few years.

Anna Mast with Cypress County says the idea behind the master plan is to maximize fire services in the community while minimizing risk.

“We’re quite proud of the fire services within Cypress County,” she said.  “With this plan, if all the recommendations move forward as presented, it’s just going to make it a better service, a higher level of service.”
