Lethbridge women charged after children left in locked vehicle

LETHBRIDGE, AB — A pair of Lethbridge women were arrested Thursday evening after allegedly leaving their two young children locked in a vehicle in minus 18 degree weather.
The Lethbridge Police Serivce responded at approximately 11:30 p.m to a report of a child crying in a locked car in the 200 block of Fifth Street South. When police arrived at the scene, a toddler was found in a car seat, shivering and in distress. A second child was discovered under a pile of clothes. Police broke a window on the car to gain entry and get the children to safety.  The children, a three-year-old girl and a four-year-old boy, were taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
A 31-year-old woman, and a 24-year-old woman, who were determined to be the mothers of the children, were found at a nearby bar. According to surveillance video, the women had been in the bar for more than an hour.
The two women, who can not be named to protect the identities of their children, were arrested and each charged with one count of failure to provide the necessities of life.The women are in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
The children are in the care of relatives.
