Community Foundation hands out $77,506 in grants

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta helped 18 community groups  Tuesday night

The foundation presented $77,506 in grants at the Foundation’s 17th annual Chair’s Reception on Tuesday.

“All of the grants that are awarded tonight will have an impact, improving the quality of life for people in Southeastern Alberta,” said Darren Folkerson, chair of the grants committee, in a news release. “The Community Foundation is dedicated to contributing to a better and more inclusive community, one that is already smart and caring. Charities in southeastern Alberta have mountains to climb in their pursuit for social change and we are here to help.”

The largest grant went to the local branch of Kidsport, who received $11,000.

The Redcliff Youth Action Society received a grant of $8,250 towards the supper program at the Redcliff Youth Centre.The Centre was at risk of shutting its doors due to a lack of funding. Janay Ulrich, the centre’s current executive director, says the centre has received a number of donations and are not at risk of closing at the moment, however, the centre is looking at new fundraising initiatives for the new year.

HALO Air Rescue received $5,900 from the foundation. Other organizations which received grants included Praxis Outreach Society, the Miywasin Society and the local chapter of Big Brothers, Big Sisters.
