Bylaw reminds Hatters to keep sidewalks clear during winter

MEDICINE HAT, AB — While the official start of winter is a few days away, bylaw officers are reminding residents about the winter specific bylaws in place for the colder weather.
Residents are responsible for the sidewalks in front of their property. After a snowfall, the walkway must be cleared within 24 hours.

For those who plug in their cars the cord also can’t be left across the sidewalk. If it has to cross then it must be at least 8 feet above.
“It’s a hundred dollar ticket that you can be fined with for not having your sidewalk cleared,” said Bylaw Officer, Heather Trail. “It’s the same for having an electrical cord across the sidewalk.”
Trail adds that the bylaws are put in place to keep residents safe.
“In the city of Medicine Hat We really value public safety, and the bylaws are built to reflect that,” she said.
