November’s Family Violence Prevention Month programming in Medicine Hat will begin Monday with a memorial walk aimed at honouring those impacted by family violence and raising awareness of local support services.

The Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society will host its 12th annual Memorial Walk at noon, starting at City Hall.

Participants will put up purple ribbons throughout the downtown core as part of the annual event.

“We invite our community to join us for this annual walk where we put up purple ribbons around the downtown core of the city,” said Natasha Carvalho, executive director of the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society.

Carvalho said the walk is one of several activities planned throughout November to highlight family violence, available supports and ways residents can help build a safer community.

The Saamis Tepee and Towne Square will also be lit purple from Nov. 1 to 7, while participating schools will display purple ribbons.

Other activities include a Family Violence Prevention Month declaration by Mayor Linnsie Clark and a presentation from the shelter society to Medicine Hat City Council on Monday, Nov. 2.

The month will also feature community training sessions, an elder abuse awareness event at the Veiner Centre on Nov. 19, and International Men’s Day celebrations at Medicine Hat College that same day.

The shelter society will also take part in the Medicine Hat Tigers’ Community Corner on Nov. 27 and an ATB Wealth Chuck-a-Puck fundraiser on Nov. 28.

Educational displays will be available at public libraries in Medicine Hat, Redcliff and Bow Island.
