Mrs. Marie Emily Butler, beloved wife of the late Mr. Richard Charles Butler, passed away in Medicine Hat on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at the age of 85 years. Marie was born in Medicine Hat on November 29, 1940. She grew up in Winnifred and received her education in Bow Island. On May 19, 1961, Marie and Richard were married and enjoyed 32 years together. Marie spent much of her life farming and raising her family. She was a strong, independent and determined woman who was proud of her family and deeply loyal to those around her. She was known for being honest, caring and adventurous, and she enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, including road trips, gardening and day trading. Sports were also an important part of Marie’s life. She enjoyed baseball, curling and following her grandchildren’s sports activities. She was particulary involved in slow pitch, hosting and organizing tournaments that ranged from local events to national competitions. Marie was a founding member and avid supporter of Blues at the Bow. She also gave her time to the Bow Island Ladies Auxiliary. Marie will be lovingly remembered by her children; Linda (Darwin) Gatz, Sharla Butler and Jeff (Nicole) Butler; grandchildren, Krystal (Kyle) Simon, Travis (Emily) Gatz, Brooke and Raegan Butler, Ali Payze, Dani Mattson-Sederberg and great-grandchildren, Bridget Gatz and Klyde Simon, River and Finley Payze. She is also survived by her sisters, Betty Johnson and Sandee Cameron; sister-in-law, Velma Butler as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family in the United States. Marie was predeceased by her husband, Richard Butler and her infant daughter, Tracey.
