Medicine Hat police recruit class begins 24-week training program

A new group of police recruits is beginning 24 weeks of intensive training in Medicine Hat as they prepare to join police services across southern Alberta.

Police Recruit Training Class No. 9 includes 12 recruits, with 10 joining Medicine Hat Police Service, one from the CPKC Police Service and one from the Blood Tribe Police Service.

The training program is delivered through a partnership between Medicine Hat Police Service and Medicine Hat College.

Over the next six months, recruits will complete competency-based training covering a wide range of skills required for a career in policing.

The curriculum includes control tactics, firearms, emergency vehicle operations, investigative skills, legal studies and report writing.

Recruits will also receive training in mental health, de-escalation and crisis management, as well as community policing.

Medicine Hat Police Service says the program emphasizes collaboration, problem solving, trust, respect and building strong relationships with the communities officers serve.

The latest class brings together recruits with a variety of backgrounds and life experiences as they begin their policing careers.

Once their training is complete, the recruits will move on to their respective police agencies.

Medicine Hat Police Service is also encouraging people interested in a career in policing to consider applying for a future recruit training class.

The application deadline for the fall 2027 class is April 2, 2027.
