Edward James Smith
January 22, 1958 – August 13, 2026
It is with deep sadness to announce the passing of Edward James Smith on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at the age of 68 years. Along with Monica, his beloved wife of 31 years, Edward leaves to cherish his memory: children, Jason (Aleesha) Smith and Christine (Michael) Westland; step-children, Bradley (Joanne) Schafer and Rachel (Curtis) Hilmoe; nine beautiful grandchildren; sister, Carol Schlaht as well as his nieces, Carmen Sedres and Candace Mathieu. He was predeceased by his parents, George ‘Ted’ and Edith Smith; sister, Bonny Jean Smith in infancy and sister, Beverly Joan Smith. Edward was the first baby born in the new wing of the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. At the time of Edward’s passing, his family was by his side and the grandchildren enjoyed time together at wonderful suppers and last minute lunches. Edward made the most of life travelling to Mexico, Cuba, Hawaii and Arizona creating many wonderful memories along the way. In his early years, he loved to golf, play hockey and loved to watch his favourite team, the Boston Bruins, along with car racing and any sport that was on TV. Edward proudly served with the Medicine Hat Fire Department for 35 years, retiring as a Captain.
