Medicine Hat’s Camp Ice Cream expands with new location and production facility

The company produces its ice cream from scratch using its own base recipe, and makes its own flavours, sauces, baked additions and inclusions, including cinnamon waffle cones and waffle chips.

Wirzba says the goal is to create a higher-quality product while using local ingredients whenever possible.

Camp Ice Cream works with regional suppliers, including Desert Springs Farm, local honey producers, coffee roasters and bakeries.

Seasonal fruit is also sourced locally when available and used in rotating flavours.

The company has also developed fundraising partnerships and created custom flavours for schools, charities and other organizations.

Wirzba says supporting children’s summer camps has become an important part of the business’s community involvement.

The company’s food truck has expanded its presence at farmers’ markets and community events throughout Medicine Hat, while additional retail partnerships, including local Co-op locations, have helped make its products available at more locations.

Camp Ice Cream also offers tours of its Homestead production facility and is exploring opportunities to expand beyond Medicine Hat.

Wirzba says growth in the ice cream industry comes with challenges, including the need for specialized transportation to keep products frozen during distribution.

The City of Medicine Hat says businesses in the local agri-food sector help connect agriculture, food production and tourism by creating products and experiences that showcase the region.
