Medicine Hat Mavericks one step closer to WCBL playoffs after weekend action

The Mavericks responded in a big way Saturday at Athletic Park, defeating the Swift Current 57s 23-9 in a game that featured six home runs from Medicine Hat’s lineup.

After scoring once in the third inning, the Mavericks exploded for six runs in the fourth and put together a 10-run fifth inning to take control of the game.

Medicine Hat added five more runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to complete the offensive outburst.

Swift Current managed four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings and added another in the seventh, but the deficit was too much to overcome.

Medicine Hat then closed out the weekend with a 4-2 loss to the Lethbridge Bulls on Monday at Spitz Stadium.

The Bulls scored twice in the first inning, added another run in the fifth and one more in the seventh. The Mavericks scored their only runs in the third and fifth innings but couldn’t complete the comeback.

Heading into the final two games of the regular season, the Mavericks sit fourth in the Western Canadian Baseball League’s East Division with a 22-32 record.

Medicine Hat holds a two-game lead over the Weyburn Beavers, who sit fifth at 20-33, for the final playoff position.

The Mavericks will finish the regular season with a two-game road series against the Swift Current 57s, with a playoff berth on the line.
