Medicine Hat Mavericks remain in playoff spot after taking two of three from Berries

An Eric Calder double would score Giacalone before the Berries’ starting pitcher, Owen Stempel, would strike out the next two batters.

The Berries responded by hitting four straight singles to start the bottom of the first inning. Leadoff hitter Brock Laird would score, as would Evan Murdoch later in the inning off a Josh Henson single.

Later on, Aiden Kilshaw would drive in both Mason Roell and Gael Salinas to put the score at 4-2 for the Berries.

The Berries would add three runs in the bottom of the second and another three in the bottom of the third, making it 10-2.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Mavs would get a pair of runs back. Giacalone would hit a one-out single, and Calder would draw a two-out walk, bringing a pitching change for the Berries.

With Clay Mixon on the mound, Blake Dale would drive both Mavs players home to cut the deficit to 10-4.

The bottom of the fifth inning had the Mavs get the first two Berries batters out before a six-run outburst.

David Heinen would walk a pair of batters before giving up a single that scored a run, then after another walk to load the bases, he gave up a grand slam to Henson.

Jackson Miller would come in to pitch for the Mavs and give up a double to Nathan Houston. He would score on a Kilshaw single, extending the Berries’ lead to 16-4.

In the bottom of the seventh, Houston was driven home by Nick Stinson’s single, which made it 17-4 for the Berries.

Brody Wrench would come into the game in the top of the eighth to pitch for the Berries. After walking Calder, he would strike out three straight batters to end the game.

Western Canadian Baseball League game will end after the eighth inning if a team is up by 10 or more runs.

Mavs starter Cody Myers was credited with the loss. He gave up 10 runs on nine hits over 2.2 innings. Stempel would get the win for the Berries.

The Mavericks now face the Miller Express in Moose Jaw on Thursday and Friday before hosting the Swift Current 57s for their final regular-season home game on Saturday.

Six games remain for the Mavericks, who are a game up on the Weyburn Beavers for the final playoff spot in the WCBL’s East Division.

Playoffs start on Aug. 7 and will be complete by Aug. 17.
