Medicine Hat Mavericks back in a playoff spot after first win of the season over Berries

On Monday, the Berries would get on the board first in the bottom of the second inning when Brock Laird would hit a single to drive in Nathan Houston.

The Mavs wouldn’t let that lead last long, as they responded in the top of the third with a run of their own. Jalen King, who had hit a leadoff single, would score on an error when Evan Morrison reached on a fielder’s choice.

In the top of the fourth, the Mavs would open things up.

Three straight singles from Blake Dale, Jalen King, and Carter Roth would load the bases. All three would advance a base on a wild pitch, with Dale’s run giving the Mavs a 2-1 lead.

Morrison would walk to load the bases again. A Nick Hill single would drive in both Jalen King and Roth. Morrison would then score on a Frankie Giacalone sacrifice fly to make it 5-1 Mavs.

The Berries would respond with a run in the bottom half of the fourth, when John Henson came in off a Nick Stinson single to cut the deficit to 5-2.

A solo home run from Giacalone in the top of the seventh would give the Mavs the 6-2 lead they would hold on to the rest of the way.

Jackson Miles pitched six innings to earn the win for the Mavs, giving up two runs, with one earned, off six hits. Trevor Syer followed up with a one-hit seventh inning, before Miguel De Jesus pitched two hitless innings to close things out.

Diego Quinonez was given the loss for the Berries, pitching five innings and giving up five runs on 12 hits. Dallen Rude closed out the final four innings only giving up the one solo home run.

The Mavs and Berries will play again on Tuesday and Wednesday at Cairns Field in Saskatoon.

Both games start at 7 p.m.
