Police stress importance of helmet use

Two youths injured in Medicine Hat e-bike collision with vehicle on weekend

Jul 6, 2026 | 10:17 AM

Medicine Hat police say no charges are expected after an e-bike carrying two youths collided with a vehicle over the weekend, leaving one rider with serious injuries.

Emergency crews responded to the intersection of Cameron Road Southeast and Ross Glen Way Southeast at about 12:55 p.m. Saturday. Members of the Medicine Hat Police Service, Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services and EMS attended the scene.

Both youths riding the e-bike were taken to the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital for treatment.

One was later transferred to a Calgary hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries.

The driver of the vehicle was not hurt.

Police say the investigation found the driver had come to a complete stop at the posted stop sign and had begun making a right turn onto Cameron Road when the e-bike, carrying two youths, entered the intersection from the sidewalk at a high rate of speed and rode into the vehicle’s path.

Investigators also determined neither youth was wearing a bicycle helmet at the time of the collision.

Police say the lack of helmets contributed to the severity of the injuries.

Based on the investigation, no charges are expected to be laid.

The Medicine Hat Police Service is reminding cyclists that Alberta law requires cyclists and passengers under the age of 18 to wear a properly fitted and approved bicycle helmet.

Riders and passengers on power-assisted bicycles, including e-bikes, must wear an approved helmet regardless of age.

Police say helmets significantly reduce the risk of serious head injuries and are encouraging all cyclists and e-bike riders to wear a properly fitted helmet every time they ride.
