Growing schedule behind slightly

May’s rains much-needed but time for some heat and sunshine, says one producer

Seeding is all-but-complete here in the southeastern corner of our province.

All that’s really needed now for farmers and ranchers is a good bout of sunshine.

Tory Campbell is the reeve for Lethbridge County, but also a producer, and says last month’s rains did put a bit of a damper on emergence.

“I think everybody is ready for some sunshine and some heat. I think the rain was much-needed and much-wanted, but everything’s kind of just sitting there languishing a bit now. So, were just waiting for some heat and some sunshine.”

Campbell concedes that May’s heavy rain, while welcome, did put things behind by a little.

“I think we’re looking at a week to 10 days at this point in time.”

The Southern region led the province this Spring in seeding progress and was the first area to reach a 100% completion rate for major crops.
