Donald “Don” Wood
September 24, 1963 – June 21, 2026
Don leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Cathy Wood; two sons, Zane Wood (Samantha Stock), Taylor Wood; his grandchildren, Zoii & Ronin Wood; mother, Doreen Wood; sister, Dawna Krahn; as well as his nephews, nieces, and their families. Don is predeceased by his father, Wayne Wood and brother, Bruce Wood.
Don was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. He lived in numerous places while growing up, attended more schools than most can imagine, but ended up back in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Then, while working as a security guard at the Maple Creek Homecoming, he met Cathy. As the saying goes “the rest is history”. Don & Cathy married in 1985 and raised their boys in the family home for their entire lives.
A degree of wanderlust came with his 30+ years long career as a pipeline dozer operator and later foreman. This career afforded Don and his family the opportunity to visit many places across Alberta, Ontario and British Columbia that most people wouldn’t think to stop and experience. Summers spent living in campgrounds in the 5th wheel are some of his sons’ most cherished memories. He took great pride in his work, and even greater pride in sharing his knowledge with younger up and coming workers. He helped train many young operators and took great pride in watching them develop and succeed no matter where life took them afterwards.
After many years of hard work, he also began to enjoy the fruits of his labor by travelling the world. Mexico, the UK, and Croatia to name a few. Adventure was in his blood, something he passed on to his sons.
We deeply appreciate all those who brought joy and comfort to Don during his cancer journey. All the texts, phone calls, hunting trips, chicken wings, jalapeno poppers, scotch, visits from family and friends really lifted his spirits and brightened his days.
In his own words, Don left a final message the family would like to share.
“I think everybody has things they regret either doing or not doing but everybody has their own journey to take. Please don’t feel sad for me as mine has come to an end, it was a hell of a ride with awesome people and wonderful experiences. Enjoy your journey and make it the best trip you can, because you only get one shot at it and you never know when it will end.”
Special thanks to the Palliative Care & Home Care teams, EMS, Emergency staff, and doctors and nurses of 4 West.
No formal funeral service will take place. Those wishing to remember Don are invited to his back yard to share refreshments and memories with his family on Saturday July 18, 2026, from 1-3pm.
