The Government of Alberta says they received Alberta musician Corb Lund’s “Water Not Coal” citizen initiative petition and signature sheets.

His petition, which needed to reach the threshold of 178,000 signatures, opposes coal mining in Alberta’s eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains.

As a result, Elections Alberta will now proceed with the citizen initiative petition verification process.

They will have 21 days to verify the petition using a process to achieve a 95 per cent confidence level.

As per the Government of Alberta the verification process includes:

  • Confirmation that only the petition signature sheets as provided to the applicant were used in the collection of signatures;
  • Confirmation that only original signatures have been collected, and individuals have signed the petition only once during the 120-day petition signing period;
  • A review of each signature to ensure the required information was provided (full name, physical address, contact information, date, signature);
  • Confirmation that each signature on the petition was witnessed by a registered canvasser and a canvasser signed each petition sheet;
  • A statistically valid random sample to confirm the signatories’ addresses are in Alberta; and
  • Contacting a statistically valid random sample of signatories to verify their information and they signed the petition.

The petition verification process will wrap up no later than July 1, in which Elections Alberta will report the verification results on the Elections Alberta website.

If the petition is successful, Elections Alberta will submit a copy of the legislative proposal to the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.

The main goal of the petition is to call on the provincial government to protect the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains and their waters that supply drinking water across Alberta from proposed coal mining projects, which Lund said could impact water quality.

More specifically, the petition question is as follows:

“The Government of Alberta shall prohibit through legislation all coal exploration and mining activities within the Eastern Slopes of Alberta’s Rocky Mountains, other than mines that are in actual production as of January 1, 2026. For clarity, this prohibition includes Northback Holdings’ Grassy Mountain Project and Valory Resources’ Blackstone Project, as well as any projects to expand any producing mines.”

Lund explained in a previous interview with rdnewsNOW that Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has told him that his petition will be on the referendum this October if they gain enough signatures.
