May 22, 2026 | 4:55 PM

Two separate collisions in Medicine Hat on Thursday afternoon sent multiple people to the hospital, including one person with serious injuries.

Emergency crews first responded about 1:49 p.m. to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway and 16 Street S.W.

Police said a preliminary investigation found an eastbound vehicle failed to stop at a red light and entered the intersection, colliding with a westbound vehicle turning onto 16 Street.

Both vehicles sustained significant damage and were deemed total losses.

The sole occupant of the eastbound vehicle suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital, where the individual remains for treatment.

The occupant of the westbound vehicle did not report any serious injuries.

No charges have been laid, and the investigation remains ongoing, as police are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or has information to contact the Medicine Hat Police Service.

Less than an hour later, at about 2:38 p.m., emergency crews responded to another two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Box Springs Road and Saamis Drive N.W.

Investigators determined that a southbound vehicle attempted to turn across the path of a northbound vehicle travelling through the intersection, resulting in a collision.

Police said the northbound vehicle sustained significant damage and was considered a total loss, while the southbound vehicle suffered repairable damage.

Occupants of the northbound vehicle were taken to the hospital for assessment.

Police said only one person sustained injuries requiring medical attention, and the injuries are believed to be minor.

The driver of the southbound vehicle was issued a violation ticket for making an unsafe turn.
