Here is what’s on this weekend in Medicine Hat: May 22-24

Medicine Hat is busy with activity this weekend as the Rise Up Hot Air Balloon Festival brings people into the city.

The fourth weekend in May looks to have ideal conditions to enjoy the next few days.

Environment Canada shows a mix of sun and cloud on Friday with a high of 22 C. The evening shows a partly cloudy sky, clearing after midnight with a low of 8 C.

Saturday is forecast to be sunny with a mix of sun and cloud near noon. The wind is set to be southwest 20 km/h gusting to 40 near noon. The daytime high is 27 C and the nighttime low is 11 C, with a clear sky.

On Sunday, it’s set to warm up even more with a high of 29 C under a sunny sky, in the evening, a clear sky and a low of 11 C.

🎈 Rise Up Hot Air Balloon Festival

FRIDAY, SATURDAY and SUNDAY

Our Collective Journey’s Hot Air Balloon Festival is back for its fifth year, having begun on Thursday and running until Sunday.

Potential balloon flights are scheduled daily at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., with the final potential flight set for Sunday morning.

The balloon glow festival is scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights around 8:30 p.m. at Kin Coulee Park.

Festival updates and livestream pilot safety briefings are available on the event’s Facebook and Instagram pages during the May 21-24 event.

A community day will be held Saturday at Medicine Hat College, beginning with a pancake breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m.

Events include vendor markets and a youth art party from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., disc golf pitch and putt starting at 11 a.m., and a barbecue from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Film screenings of Rise Up: The Film Documentary at noon and Zootopia 2 at 3 p.m. will take place, plus Yoga for All Ages at 2 p.m. and Zumba Gold at 3 p.m.

Wrapping up the events at the college is a community day close-out from 4 to 4:30 p.m.

Saturday evening events shift to Kin Coulee Park, where a potential balloon launch is followed by the balloon glow near the band shelter.

Music and more than a dozen food trucks begin around 5 p.m. as Rise Up takes over the park for the evening.

🏒 Brooks Bandits play for the Rogers BCHL Cup

Friday

The Brooks Bandits are a win away from defending their BCHL title and host game five on Friday at the Centennial Regional Arena.

The Bandits hold a 3-1 series lead over the Nanaimo Clippers heading into the contest.

Puck drop is at 7 p.m.

🏁 Medicine Hat Drag Strip Opening Weekend

FRIDAY, SATURDAY, and SUNDAY

It’s opening weekend for the Medicine Hat Drag Racing Association, kicking off the summer season at the local track.

Gates open Friday at 5 p.m. for spectators, with tech inspections also beginning at that time. Racing gets underway at 7 p.m. under the lights.

On Saturday, gates open at 9 a.m. with time trials starting at noon as drivers dial in their setups, with racing action beginning at 4 p.m.

The weekend wraps up Sunday with gates opening again at 9 a.m. Time trials follow in the morning, and eliminations are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

🚶Colour Walk by Hues for Humanity

SATURDAY

The Hues for Humanity with Tourism Medicine Hat host the Colour Walk at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, with a 5-kilometre route along the Sierra Coulee trails starting at the Medicine Hat Tourism Centre.

The morning begins with a mass colour toss before participants head out through multiple colour stations, where volunteers will cover runners and walkers in bursts of colour.

A final group colour toss at the finish line wraps up the event in a rainbow of celebration.

A DJ and MC will keep the energy going throughout the morning, with prizes for best costumes in several categories, including individuals, families, teams, and even pets.

Door prizes will also be handed out, and participants can vote for their favourite colour station.

The event is open to all ages, with kids participating free of charge.

🐶 2026 Pet Fest at Cypress Centre

SATURDAY

The Cypress Centre Pavilion is set to host Pet Fest from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

The animal-focused market and community event is designed for pet lovers of all kinds. A variety of local vendors offering pet products and services will be on-site.

Activities will include custom pet caricatures and raffle prizes throughout the day.

The first 100 attendees will receive a complimentary gift bag filled with goodies.

The event will also raise money in support of the SPCA and the Root Cellar.

🚴 BMX Free Trial Day

SATURDAY

The Medicine Hat BMX Club hosts its first of four BMX Free Trial Days on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., allowing riders to try the activity at the track located northwest of the Big Marble Go Centre.

Future events will take place on June 7 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, and June 22 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Riders will need to bring long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and runners. If you have a full-face helmet, gloves, or a bike, bring them along; if not, the club will help with gear.

📽 Movies at the Monarch

SATURDAY and SUNDAY

A pair of matinee showings is hosted at the Monarch Theatre this weekend in downtown Medicine Hat.

Both movies start at 2 p.m., with doors opening at 1 p.m.

Showing on Saturday is Up, a 2009 animated comedy-drama from Pixar and Disney about an elderly widower who attaches numerous helium balloons to his house to travel to South America with a youngster to fulfill a promise that he made to his late wife.

Then on Sunday, a screening of Lyle, Lyle Crocodile, a 2022 live-action musical fantasy comedy and adaptation of the children’s story about a family who moves to New York City, where their struggling son befriends a crocodile named Lyle, who can communicate verbally only by singing.

Payment is cash only at the Monarch, with a $5 admission fee for each movie. The concession has two items for $5.

🚎 Sunshine Trolley Guided City Tour

SATURDAY

The Sunshine Trolley is back for a Guided City Tour at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, offering a tour of Medicine Hat’s most recognizable landmarks.

Fuelled by South Country Co-op, the tours give riders a narrated look at Canada’s Sunniest City, with stops including the Saamis Tepee, Medalta in the Historic Clay District, and the Ewart-Duggan House.

Along the way, guests will hear stories about the city’s history, neighbourhoods, and streets, with chances to briefly hop off and explore.

Tours depart from the Visitor Information Centre on Gehring Road Southwest, with pop-up dates planned throughout the season.

Children 12 and under ride free, and the trolley is wheelchair accessible.

Booking is required, and is available on the Tourism Medicine Hat website.

🍦 Sunshine Ice Cream Crawl

SATURDAY

The Sunshine Ice Cream Crawl aboard the Sunshine Trolley is a two hour tour with stops at three local ice cream shops.

It starts Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Visitor Information Centre.

With the purchase of a ticket you get to sample a variety of ice cream flavours and styles, some made from scratch and in-house, with a treat to take home to finish the experience.

Peek behind the scenes at some stops, and have a chance to ask questions when you meet the passionate people behind the local businesses.

The costs is $39 for an Adult, $25 for children 12 and under.

Family Bundle are $100, they can includes two adults and two children, or one adult and three children.

🥍️ Badlands Sun Devils Lacrosse

SATURDAY

The Badlands Sun Devils Jr. B lacrosse team hosts the Strathmore Venom for a game at the Kinplex Arena on Saturday, starting at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free.

🚶Medicine Hat Kidney Walk

SUNDAY

The Kidney Walk returns to Medicine Hat at 10 a.m. on Sunday, bringing together participants in support of people living with kidney disease.

The family-friendly event starts at Medicine Hat College, with registration at 9 a.m. and a 10 a.m. start. Walkers can complete a 2.75-kilometre loop or do two laps for 5.5 kilometres.

Organizers say the walk raises awareness and funds for kidney research, patient programs, and financial support.

Participants are encouraged to fundraise, with recognition available at multiple levels.

A virtual option is also available for those unable to attend in person.

🥎️ Battle of the Badges: Medicine Hat Fire vs. Police Softball Game

SUNDAY

The annual Battle of the Badges softball game between the Medicine Hat Fire Service and the Medicine Hat Police Service takes place at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Athletic Park.

Tickets are $12 each, with proceeds supporting the Root Cellar Food and Wellness Hub.

Alongside the game, fans can expect a live DJ throughout the afternoon and a non-perishable food drive.

⚾️ Medicine Hat Mavericks Fan Fest

SUNDAY

Fan Fest will start at 4 p.m. on Sunday at Athletic Park.

There will be a chance to meet the Mavericks, bouncy castles, games, mascots, face painting, live music, and the concession will be open.

A dunk tank will also be onsite with proceeds going to Medicine Hat Adaptive Sport and Recreation.

Individual tickets are $5, a family ticket is $10. Admission is included for those who purchase tickets to the Battle of the Badges game.
