Mike Hopkins
1954 ~ 2026
Michael “Mike” Hopkins was born on January 5, 1954, in Kirkland Lake, ON., and passed away at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice in Medicine Hat on Sunday, May 10, 2026. He was predeceased by his parents, William (Bill) and Barb Hopkins; brother, Billy and sister, Cindy.
Michael leaves behind his best friend and spouse of 38 years, Tenley; her daughter, Stacey (Kent) Wilson; grandson, Seamus Murphy O’Flanagan; sisters, Michele Nixon and Roseann (Bill) Glennon, numerous nieces and nephews as well as 9 in-laws and their families from Tenley’s extended family. Also grieving his loss are several friends including Cal, John, Grant and Dale along with many others he made lasting friendships with over his life in Medicine Hat and Fort McMurray.
Michael was an avid hockey fan… Go Habs! (and of course the Medicine Hat Tigers). He was also a classic car buff. His 1966 GTO took pride place in his garage and many car shows. He lovingly restored “The GOAT” from the ground up to its original form. Michael worked a few jobs throughout his life. He was a prison guard in Ontario as well as an optician in training in Fort McMurray, but his true passion and joy came from his job as the production coordinator at the Syncrude Mildred Lake Mine from where he retired.
Michael will be remembered for his dry sense of humour, his ever present hat (which he sometimes even forgot to take off at bedtime!), the pride he took in his home’s yard, but mostly for his love for his constant companion, Tenley.
Tenley and family wish to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the ALS Clinic at Calgary South Campus Hospital, the nurses and staff of 4 West as well as the Outpatient Support Team from the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, Dr. Natasha Scholtz, the wonderful caring and compassionate nurses at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice as well as the Palliative Care Dr.’s Dirker, Monty and Lotter.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Come and Go Celebration of Mike’s life which will be held in the Milestone room at the Reflections Reception Facility, 937 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Friday, May 15, 2026, between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Please use the north side building entrance.
