Medicine Hat Police Chief Alen Murphy followed through on a friendly playoff wager after the Prince Albert Raiders eliminated the Medicine Hat Tigers in six games in the WHL Eastern Conference Final.

The police service shared photos on Facebook of Murphy wearing a Raiders jersey around town after losing a bet with the chief of the Prince Albert Police Service, Patrick Nogier.

Murphy said the tradition began last season when the Tigers defeated Prince Albert, and Nogier wore a Tigers jersey after losing their bet.

“We made the bet again this season, and this time, unfortunately for me, PA came out on top. So I was good to my word and a deal’s a deal,” Murphy said.

Murphy had spent part of Thursday morning taking photos around Medicine Hat in the Raiders jersey, and jokingly said he had no plans to keep wearing it.

“I have no intention of wearing that thing ever again,” Murphy said.

“But next year is another season, and we’ll see, we’ll probably make another bet if we meet in the playoffs again.”

Murphy said the wager was all in good fun and meant to build community spirit around the series.

“It was tough to throw on a Raiders jersey, but deals a deal, it was good fun for myself and Chief Nogier, and just to add to the community spirit around the series,” Murphy said.

“We’re also competitive, just like the teams are.”

The photos taken of Murphy around Medicine Hat mirrored the photos the Prince Albert Police Service posted on Facebook last year of Nogier wearing a Tigers jersey around Prince Albert.

In the post last year, the service had Nogier “thrown in cells” after wearing the jersey at the police station before later serving “a five-minute major in the penalty box” at the Art Hauser Centre.

Murphy wished the Raiders well as they prepare to face the Everett Silvertips in the WHL championship series beginning Friday.

“They gave us a [good] series; unfortunately, it didn’t go our way, but we still wish them the best,” Murphy said.
