Livestock Market Association of Canada hosts auctioneering championship in Maple Creek

May 5, 2026 | 9:44 AM

The Livestock Markets Association of Canada (LMAC) will bring its national auctioneering championship to Maple Creek on Friday, May 8.

It will showcase 42 of the country’s top auctioneers at Cowtown Livestock Exchange, where auctioneers from across Canada will each sell seven to eight drafts of live cattle and a donated black box item provided by a local business.

Each competitor will be judged and scored by a panel of six experienced judges, including past champions, order buyers and market operators from across Canada.

Cowtown’s Tyler Cronkhite, one of the event’s organizers, says they will have rookie auctioneers to seasoned veterans, and says it’s a great way to market cattle.

“We’re looking forward to showcasing some of the best cattle we have in southwest Saskatchewan and southeast Alberta,” Cronkhite said.

“We’re going to have a great mix of cattle and local cattle from our local producers. If anybody needs or wants to consign any cattle, they can feel free to give me a call, and we’ll make sure that we can showcase their cattle on that day,” he added.

“We’re going to kick it off at the opening ceremonies at 9 a.m. and get our past champion up there to sell.”

Cronkhite expects the sale to continue until about 5 p.m. on Friday.

The winner of the championship will receive prizes including a stock trailer, cash, a belt buckle and a championship ring, along with recognition as the top auctioneer in the country.

Rookie competitors will also be recognized, along with top finishers and interview awards tied to industry knowledge and communication skills.

Cronkhite says the auctioneers will do a live interview about facing issues in the cattle industry, with a top award for the highest-scored interview.

“That’s a really neat deal to sit down there and talk with people and explain the issues that are going on in the cattle business or what could be coming down in the cattle business,” Cronkhite said.

“I think the interview part is very, very important for the auctioneers and being able to represent the LMAC.”

The national event rotates annually across provinces.

Last year’s competition was held in Virden, Man., while next year’s is scheduled for Ponoka, Alta.

The 2026 Man/Sask Livestock Auctioneering Championship will also be part of the event in Maple Creek.

A custom belt buckle will go to the winners selected from a dozen Manitoba and Saskatchewan auctioneers competing.

A total of 1,500 to 2,000 head of cattle are expected to be marketed during the day-long event, which will be open to the public. Allowing those interested in the cattle industry to observe a live auction.

The event will run alongside the 2026 Livestock Markets Association Annual Convention at the Medicine Hat Lodge from May 7 to 10.

Cronkhite says the convention includes business meetings and speakers with insight into the cattle industry.

Registration for that event is done online.
