Alberta Highway Cleanup goes May 2 from 7-5, so drive cautious

Apr 30, 2026 | 4:59 PM

Alberta RCMP are requesting motorists take caution this May 2 as there will be thousands of volunteers out cleaning grassy areas around provincial highways.

More than 12,000 people are expected out for the annual highway cleanup event, with 8,000 of them children representing clubs like 4H, the Junior Forest Wardens, and other youth groups.

Participants will be wearing safety vests, and there will be caution posters placed adjacent to cleanup areas. The event is expected to run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Alberta RCMP asks motorists to slow down in marked cleanup areas and to be aware of added foot-traffic.

There will be added patrols across provincial highways to enforce traffic safety and prevent speeding in these areas.

Since 1976, more than $20 million has been paid to more than 17,000 clubs and organizations that have participated in the annual highway cleanup, representing more than 380,000 volunteers, according to the Government of Alberta.

Those volunteers have collected more than 1.1 million bags of trash along almost 250,000 kilometres of highway.

Volunteers must be 9+, take part in a safety training program and be under adult supervision.

Alberta’s government pays $100 for every kilometre of highway cleaned.

In the event of inclement weather, the cleanup will be held Saturday, May 9.
