City of Medicine Hat to host Sports Wall of Fame induction ceremony at the end of May

Wade Peterson is well known for his lifelong contributions to boxing. His boxing career initially spanned from 1979 to 1986, before he returned to the ring in 2017 at the age of 51. Peterson won multiple provincial titles and captured a Golden Gloves Belt. He continues to coach at the Medicine Hat Boxing and Fitness Club.

Peterson’s involvement in boxing extends to refereeing and judging. He has officiated at national and international events. He officiated a main event at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris and Pre‑Olympic qualifiers, where he served as both a referee and judge. He has credentials as a World Boxing Referee and Judge Evaluator.

Wes King-Hunter has been involved in the volleyball community for over 35 years and was inducted into the Volleyball Alberta Hall of Fame in 2017.

He’s been a coach, educator, and builder of the sport in Medicine Hat and beyond.

King-Hunter moved to the city in 1988 and has coached at nearly every level. He is a co-founder of the South East Alberta Volleyball Club and has led high school and college teams with provincial success. He has served with Canadian national programs and continued to mentor athletes through the Crescent Heights High School Volleyball Academy.

He has also held several leadership roles with provincial volleyball organizations and boards.

“The Sports Wall of Fame celebrates excellence in sport by honouring past and present leaders who inspire future generations,” City of Medicine Hat Superintendent of Recreation Services Michael Ractliffe said.

“Robert, Wade, and Wes exemplify this spirit through their unwavering dedication and the lasting impact they have made on their respective sports and the Medicine Hat sporting community.”

The Sports Wall of Fame ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. in the Big Marble Go Centre gymnasium.

The event will be filmed and posted on the City’s YouTube channel.

Nominations for the Sports Wall of Fame are accepted year-round with an annual cutoff date September 30.
