Track and Field athletes at Medicine Hat High School bring home medals to open season

The Medicine Hat High School Track and Field program participated in the Battle of the Border competition in Kamloops over the weekend.

The competition featured about 400 athletes from across southern British Columbia, along with several schools from Alberta, from April 24 to 26.

Local athletes from Medicine Hat competed at various events on Saturday and had a great start to the season with multiple podium finishes across track and field events despite an unpleasant drive on Friday.

Gold medals were won by the men’s 4×100-metre relay team of Edward Hicks, Max Trentini, Keene Shigehiro and Mathieu Laguerre, who posted a time of 46.85 seconds.

Donald Alba captured gold in both the long jump with a mark of 6.07 metres and the high jump at 1.90 metres, while Keene Shigehiro topped the podium in discus with a throw of 39.82 metres and javelin at 40.98 metres.

Julia Dyck also earned gold in discus with a throw of 30.66 metres.

Silver medals went to Emma Agar-Weninger in the triple jump with a distance of 9.91 metres, Malek Mohamad in the 100-metre hurdles in 16.58 seconds, and Mathieu Laguerre in both the 300-metre hurdles in 44.86 seconds and the 1,500 metres in 4:33.20.

Max Trentini added a silver in the 200 metres in 23.35 seconds, while Julia Dyck placed second in shot put with a throw of 8.39 metres.

Bronze medals were claimed by the women’s 4×100-metre relay team of Jirah Ferguson, Marta Zazzi, Emma Agar-Weninger and Annelie Nelson in 56.42 seconds.

Edward Hicks placed third in the 300-metre hurdles in 45.22 seconds, Max Trentini in the 100 metres in 11.10 seconds, Zaide Kolody in the 800 metres in 2:03.16, and Malek Mohamad in the pole vault with a height of 2.30 metres.

Just off the podium was Annelie Nelson with a fourth-place finish in discus, Julia Dyck was fourth in high jump, and Michael Hayward placed fourth in the 300-metre hurdles with a time of 47.54 seconds.

The team’s next competition will take place in Swift Current on May 2.
