Brooks RCMP investigate oilfield break ins and copper wire theft

Apr 21, 2026 | 6:49 PM

Brooks RCMP are investigating a series of break-ins and thefts targeting oilfield and gas sites, including incidents involving stolen copper wire and industrial equipment.

Police said the incidents have been reported over three consecutive days from April 16 and April 18.

On April 16, officers responded to a break and enter at an oil battery northeast of Tilley, where two masked suspects allegedly cut through wire fencing to access a storage area.

Items valued between $5,000 and $10,000 have been reported stolen, as police conducted a scene examination and collected evidence, including CCTV footage.

RCMP on April 17 received a report from an employee of ATCO Gas regarding the theft of batteries from a gas site in the County of Newell.

On April 18, officers were called to an oilfield site along Range Road 152, where a front gate had been forced open and a lock cut.

Investigators said suspects entered the site offices and stole various items, while also targeting two additional sites operated by the same company, where copper wire was taken.

Police say all three incidents remain under investigation.

Copper wire thefts, particularly in rural and oilfield areas, have been a recent issue for Brooks RCMP.

Officers are urging businesses to take precautions such as securing equipment, improving lighting and surveillance, and reporting suspicious activity promptly.

Information regarding these incidents is to be reported to Brooks RCMP at 403-362-5535.
