Medicine Hat Emergency Services to simulate active assailant drill at Co-op Place Monday

Apr 16, 2026 | 9:33 AM

Medicine Hat Emergency Services providers will simulate an Emergency Response Plan drill.

An active assailant drill will be coordinated by the City of Medicine Hat’s Emergency Management Team at Co-op Place on Monday, April 20.

There will be emergency vehicles and personnel on site as part of the planned exercise.

The City says there is no real incident or threat to the public.

The exercise will activate Co-op Place’s Emergency Response Plan beginning at 9 a.m. and allow teams from the participating agencies to practice drills and test response procedures.

Police will use the opportunity to run training scenarios, starting with smaller-scale threats and progressing to a full-scale active-assailant scenario.

The City will update the Co-op Place Emergency Response Plan and Emergency Communications through information gained from the exercise.

They say this will ensure a more efficient and coordinated response in the case of a real incident.

Alberta legislation requires municipalities to conduct at least one emergency exercise each year.

The exercise will include participation from Co-op Place, Medicine Hat 911, Medicine Hat Fire Service, Medicine Hat Police Service, HALO Air Ambulance, and Emergency Health Services.
