Medicine Hat police charge 17-year-old with multiple offences after crash involving injured youth

Apr 9, 2026 | 3:23 PM

A 17-year-old male driver is facing multiple charges, including four counts of dangerous operation causing bodily harm, after police say he was later located uninjured following a collision and a fail-to-remain incident.

A member of the Medicine Hat Police Service Patrol Section at about 1:20 a.m. on April 7 was conducting traffic control near the Trans-Canada Highway when a truck passed eastbound at a high rate of speed.

The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but it continued north on 13 Ave, where it lost control and struck a traffic light pole.

The driver and a male passenger fled on foot, while three other youth occupants exited the vehicle.

One female youth was located injured in the rear passenger seat.

All four youths were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, as police later confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen.

Charges include four counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, possession of stolen property over $5,000, three counts of breach of probation, driving without a licence and without insurance, and failure to remain at the scene of an accident.

The accused was held for a judicial interim release hearing and remanded into custody with his next court appearance scheduled for April 10, 2026, at Medicine Hat Provincial Court.

The three passengers were also charged with breaching court orders and were released to appear in Medicine Hat Provincial Court on May 25, 2026.

The Medicine Hat Police Service has not released the names of the youths in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The investigation remains ongoing.
