Medicine Hat area minor hockey teams bring home medals over the weekend

A pair of Medicine Hat area teams won provincial hockey titles on Sunday.

The Medicine Hat Wildcats U13 A female team went undefeated during the season, and took the gold medal in Irvine. They won the finals over the GHC Chaos from Calgary by a 7-3 score. The Wildcats were dominant throughout the tournament, with four wins and a tie. The only tie was a 1-1 contest against the Chaos in the Wildcats opening game on Thursday. Overall, the Wildcats outscored their opponent 32-4 over the five tournament games, with three shutouts in games against Lloydminster, Edmonton, and Red Deer.

The Irvine Bulldogs won the U13 B title over St. Paul with a 5-4 win in the final game in Whitecourt. The Bulldogs, much like the Wildcats, went undefeated on the weekend with four wins and a tie. They tied their first game against the host Whitecourt team 2-2 to start the tournament. Their goals differential through the five games was 24-9.

A silver medal finish for the Medicine Hat Hounds in the U13 A event with a 5-2 finals loss to the host Red Deer team. The Hounds had a strong tournament, with four wins before the finals loss. Their goal differential was 36-17.

Also bringing home silver was the Medicine Hat Wildcats U13 B female team from Vermilion. They had three wins and two losses at the tournament, and an even goal differential with nine goals for and against. They dropped the final game to the Hughenden Jets 3-0.

The Irvine Bulldogs U18 B female team had a tough tournament in Fairview, losing all three contests and scoring five goals to the opponents’ nine.

The South East Tigers U17 AAA team fell short in their quest to reach provincials. They dropped both games to the Calgary North Stars in the second round. After a 3-1 loss on Wednesday in Calgary, the Tigers were blanked 4-0 back in Medicine Hat on Saturday.
