Karen Hommy

1944 – 2026

Karen Alexandra Hommy was born in Nipawin, Saskatchewan, on January 10, 1944, to John and Donnie Knox. The family stayed in Saskatchewan for a while before they moved to Prince George, BC. Karen married young and had six children by the time she was 22! Life was very busy with that crew, but it never stopped her from singing and playing music, which was one of her biggest treasures. Karen and her mom were best friends in this venture. They were always dragging the kids to this and that to sing and play something for people. And there wasn’t much of a choice for us neither. Karen worked at a juvenile group home for 15 years as Social Worker. She really enjoyed working with the kids. After Karen retired, she married again and moved up to Progress, BC north of Prince George. She belonged to the Peace Mission Chapel there where she continued her love for God and her love for her Christian music. Karen was invited to a music school to teach how to play the stand-up bass, great honour for her. She belonged to many bands throughout her life and blue grass was her passion. You should’ve heard her play that mandolin! Her one band, the Soul Sisters won the bluegrass band of the year five years running. She was very talented. Thank goodness we all have many of her CD’s that she recorded over the years. Karen was able to go down to Yuma, Arizona in the winter and do nothing but play. With having six children, Karen was blessed with 15 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.  As if six kids weren’t enough, Karen was able to fit in a few more along the way. Karen added a sister and three brothers more to our pack. Karen moved down to Brooks/Medicine Hat in 2023 to be closer to her two children. She joined The First Baptist Church for great music and fellowship. She moved into the Cypress View Lodge a year ago where she could join some music groups and have more people around! She found the music people immediately and joined them, playing her favourite mandolin! They had a wonderful Bible study group that she very much enjoyed also. Karen loved being with people so it was a great fit for her. Karen never met a stranger and her smile was big and cheerful. Karen passed away on March 5, surrounded by her family singing all her favourite songs and hymns. She even got to listen to her mom and herself singing from long ago.

Karen is predeceased by her parents, John and Donnie; husband, Grant; son, Allan; and daughter, Crystal. Left to cherish Karen’s memory are her children, Barbara, Dolores, Franz (Jacqueline), and Graham (Shelly); step-children, Dorothy, Clint, Layton & Matt; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers; and 4 sisters.

A Celebration of Life will be held on March 10, 2026 at Heights Baptist Church at 3:00PM.
