Arthur Grove

1932 – 2026

It is with heavy hearts the family of Arthur James Grove announce his passing at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at the age of 94 years.

Art was born in Edmonton and raised throughout small towns in rural Alberta, moving often due to his father’s position with Canadian Pacific Railway. Those early years shaped Art’s adaptability, strong work ethic and gift for connecting with people from all walks of life.

Determined and self-motivated, Art pursued his education independently and earned his Second Class Steam Engineer certification; a testament to his perseverance and quiet ambition. On April 5, 1952, he married Marion Johnson at Fifth Avenue Gaetz United Church in Medicine Hat.

Art was a man of many careers and talents. Over the years he worked with Canadian Pacific Railway, the Medicine Hat Police Service as an officer, Saskatchewan Potash and at the Goodyear Tire Factory. The majority of his working life, however, was spent in the oil and gas industry, where his expertise and entrepreneurial spirit eventually led him to form a partner company, Allwest Compressor Products Ltd. After a successful and respected career, he retired in 1991.

Art will be remembered as kind, generous and endlessly entertaining. A natural storyteller with a sharp wit, he had a way of captivating any room. Charismatic and warm, people gravitated toward him. He was a gifted musician, an enthusiastic curler and golfer, an avid fisherman and a lover of a well-timed joke. Whether playing cards, sharing stories or enjoying games with family and friends, Art’s greatest joy was putting a smile on someone’s face.

He was a proud member of the local organizations including the Elks Lodge and the Medicine Hat Oilmans in which reflected his commitment to fellowship and community. Yet his proudest achievements were not found in titles or careers, they were his enduring friendships, his strong and loving family and the respect he earned simply by being himself. Art treated everyone he met with warmth and welcome, leaving a lasting impression wherever he went.

He had a special love for animals, especially dogs, who seemed to sense the kindness in him as naturally as people did.

Art’s legacy lives on in the laughter he sparked, the stories he shared, the music he played and the example he set. He was a man who made life brighter and he will be deeply missed.

Along with his loving companion, Irene Wiebe, Art leaves to cherish his memory: children, Lynanne, David (Shirley), Terry (Jim), Bob (Linda) and Pam (John); grandchildren, Kevin (Arminnie), Tracy (Curtis), Scott (Christina), Steven (Keri), Richelle (Patrick), Joel (Jessica), Kyle (Stephanie), Brandon (Jennifer), Cameron (Melissa), Karissa (Connor) and Brady (Andrea); blessed with 19 great-grandchildren; brother; sister as well as Irene and her family and Violet’s family.  He was predeceased by his parents, James and Stella Grove; step-mother, Jean; wife, Marion Grove; son, Jim; sister, Phyllis Langier; son-in-law, Brian and Violet Fairless.
