Brooks RCMP received a report on Feb. 11, 2026, of an armed robbery that occurred at Walmart a few days prior.

An employee reported that while assisting a male customer purchasing a cellphone, the suspect displayed a weapon inside his backpack and threatened to shoot the employee if the phone was not activated.

Police say that further investigation revealed a similar incident involving the same suspect had occurred a few days earlier, but was not reported to police either.

Officers investigated and identified the suspect as 50-year-old Leonardo Garcia of Brooks.

Mounties then located Garcia and took him into custody without incident.

He faces charges of robbery with a firearm, uttering threats, carrying concealed weapon, possession of weapon for dangerous purposes, and failure to comply.

Garcia was remanded into custody and appeared in Medicine Hat court on Feb. 17, 2026.
